The gardens, with an area of nine hectares, are laid out on and around the nineteenth-century Fort Hoofddijk. The Utrecht Botanical Gardens are part of Utrecht University. They still have a research function, but are now also open to the public!
Upon entering you first walk through the rock garden. Walk along the large rocky outcrop on the left-hand depot of the Fort and relax in the splashing water of the waterfall in the mountain stream
The System Garden was originally a real educational garden. Follow the paths and discover how the flowering plants develop
In the greenhouse complex you can make a trip to the tropics. Cocoa, Papaya and vine species can grow here because of the tropical climate control.
The Buitenfort is located directly on the outside of the moat. Walk over the bridge and be surprised by the many Bamboo species in the Bamboo Forest. You will also find other Japanese and Chinese plants such as peonies
The Thematuin is a feast for your senses. Here you can smell, feel, taste and even hear plants
In the Diertjestuin live all kinds of small animals such as frogs, dragonflies, finders and bees. The real daredevils should definitely look behind in the garden. There is a breeding ground for ring tubes. But rest assured, these snakes are not poisonous and very shy
The Utrecht Botanical Gardens are open from 1 March to 1 December.
